Calgary Renovations - How to Find the Best Calgary Home Renovators
Calgary Renovations Contractors – Questions To Ask Before You Hire A Renovations Contractor
There are few projects as rewarding as renovating the house, as renovations will both boost the value of your home (often to the point where the renovations pay for themselves) as well as boost your quality of life and improve your overall happiness. If you've been living in your home for a long time, there are probably aspects of the house that you are just dying to change. Renovating is your chance to make all of those changes, and more, and completely reinvent the look and feel of your house. But unless you have a lot of time on your hands or are a gifted carpenter, it's likely that you're going to need a little help. That's where Calgary renovations contractors come in, but how can you decide between them all and which one do you know you can trust?
The way to come to a decision about which contractor to hire is by having a set of criteria handy for evaluating each prospective company. But unless you've had renovations done before, you might not know specifically which questions to ask. That's what this guide is for. A short list of questions to ask each contractor to give you peace of mind about choosing the right one.
1) Do you have any references? This might seem like common sense, but you would be surprised how many people forget to ask. A good contractor should have plenty of references and people willing to refer them. Ideally a contractor should have an entire portfolio handy, where you can look at photos of their previous work and contact their previous clients. How to interview a reference is a separate article entirely, but suffice to say that you should give them an opportunity to tell their story, and give you a preview of what it will be like to work with this contractor.
2) Do you have an in-house designer? A good company will have a designer on their staff, which will enable them to work with you from start to finish on the project. Being able to work with a designer means being able to plan out the entire renovation with a professional, and then rest secure in the knowledge that your renovations company is experienced at carrying out your designer's plans. It can also help to go over a budget with a designer, to prevent you from overspending and being unable to complete the project.
3) How long will this job take? Once you've explained your job, either to the owner of the company or the designer, ask how long they think the job will take. This is more about getting a timeline from the company, and less about knowing exactly how long the work will take. Having a timeline will keep both you and the contractor accountable and on schedule.
4) Do you warranty your work? and Are you insured? Insurance and warranties is something you'll want to find out about before you hire the renovations experts to come into your home. A good contractor will stand behind their work, and will also be equipped with insurance to protect both you and themselves from potential liabilities.
While there are other questions you can ask, by asking just these four you'll have covered a number of your bases, and more importantly, you'll be on your way to developing rapport with your contractor, rapport that you can build off of as the project continues.
